Do you ever look around your kitchen, or your home, and wonder “where did all this come from?”
If you’re anything like me, sometimes you look around and wonder when the heck you became a grownup. Whose matching dishtowels are these? Who’s sorting those plastic containers? And who not only restocks the refrigerator with fresh food, but is also constantly trying to produce meals and snacks from it?
I am? How? When?
Come to think of it, when did I learn to look after an entire household, almost on autopilot? Because if you think I’m actually paying attention when I’m doing half of this stuff, you’re dreaming! I’m also working, raising two kids, juggling lists, you name it.
If you’re anything like me, you learned as you went along, you picked it up, you asked for advice and you faked a lot of it along the way. Why yes, that is my beautiful collection of cookbooks! I’m never going to tell you I haven’t used half of them. I won’t tell you how I can decorate with the best of them but will avoid the vacuum like the plague. And I wouldn’t dream of telling you that I haven’t used my iron since 2005.
Actually, I will. That’s exactly what I’ll share here – the ideals, the dreams, the realities and the craziness that you find in a real kitchen, a real home.
Sometimes I’ll share bits of wisdom you’ll want to adopt. Sometimes I’ll share what I’m craving or cooking. Sometimes I’m going to make wild mistakes and you’re going to laugh at me.
I’m going to make it fun because I know the truth, and I’m willing to tell it. I know that we love to feed our families, enjoy our homes and entertain our friends. I know that we love when our houses are clean, and we can find the things we own when we need them. But I’ll also be the one that will tell you I don’t dust behind the fridge, nor much of the furniture either. But I’m a grown up now, and some of these things are just what we grownups do. So I learn, I pick things up, I ask for advice and I fake a few things. You do too. And we’re all just going to be okay with that.
We’ll talk about what’s going on in the kitchen, how to keep our homes running smoothly, and how sometimes it falls apart and all we can do is laugh.
So come get to know me and my eternal domestic optimism. Yes, I bought Martha Stewart magazines long before I was married. I saved pictures of holiday decorations, nurseries, gardens and tips for planting bulbs years before I ever needed them.
Then I got married, had two kids, started two businesses and threw out the ideals.
Today it’s all about real life. How I live in my real kitchen, and in my real home.
And the reality is far more amazing.
Won’t you join me?
~~~~~
Next week, be sure to come see what scares me most about the holidays, and how I even get a little shocked when some of you go around doing it in public. (Um, I was talking about what I call PDC – a public display of cooking, what were you thinking?)
See you next week!
Jen
EDITOR’S NOTE: What does Jen Taylor, aka littlemissmocha, have to do with the Electrolux Canada brand and, by extension, appliances? Well, nothing on the surface. She’s not here to sell you a dishwasher, refrigerator or oven range, or a washer-dryer for that matter (that’s our job)… we wanted her here because this blog isn’t about appliance sales, it’s about life. How tough it is, how strange it is, how exciting it is and, yes, how sweet it is. At Electrolux we say “be even more amazing”… and we think Jen will help us communicate that more effectively in fresh and wonderful ways.
Don’t get us wrong, we’ll chime in with some Electrolux Canada messaging now and then to inform Jen’s readers of special promotions and opportunities, and we’ll often tie some of her messaging into some of ours, but you should know that her words are her own and we feel she is here to add value, not sell Electrolux Canada.
That said, if and when you DO want to hear directly from Electrolux Canada, please feel free to sign up for updates.
Awesome post! I often ponder the same questions. Especially when talking to my husband b/c he has NO CLUE how to keep the house running. He looks to me for all the food buying, prep, etc. I guess he thinks I was born with that “bit”…um…no.
I can’t wait to read more.
Thanks, Merry! And oh yes, that can happen – though I will confess my husband is pretty domestic. But he’s not a “fuss over household routine” guy, ever. If I go away, yup, there are lists. ; )
Thanks for reading!
Jen, I avoid my iron like the plague. Seriously, I have perfectly good clothing in my closet that I don’t wear b/c it would require ironing. Some people find it relaxing. Me…so not much. Talk about a bore chore. I’d rather wash dishes or fold laundry.
p.s. I own Martha’s Home Keeping Handbook. Now ask me if I’ve ever opened it.
Mel, so true. I buy clothing that doesn’t need ironing, and am ultra careful to whip things out of the dryer and hang it up so it doesn’t wrinkle. ; )
And the handbook bit made me laugh. Now you want to go open it, just to say you did, don’t you? Go on. All the cool kids are doing it. ; )
